Hashim Family: Brookline Family Photography at Larz Anderson Park

Alone under the overcast early morning sky, I meandered through Larz Anderson Park, scouting locations and evaluating light for a family photo session at the top of the hour. The park was much greener than I expected, many of its trees seemed late to notice it was mid-October. After an encounter with a red-tailed hawk (a story for another day), I trekked up a steep hill to meet the Hashim family at the summit of Brookline's Larz Anderson Park, passing the Auto Museum where a stream of classic automobiles—including a Delorean!—had begun to fill the lawn for its famous weekend car shows.

Emily and Brian Hashim's family had recently grown. A few months earlier they—and their ebullient three-year old son, Ben—welcomed a baby girl, Sam. As the father of two young boys (4 and 1) I could relate to the happy madness an infant can bring to a home. But they arrived appearing well-rested and enthusiastic, showing none of what could have been a hectic morning getting two children camera-ready. I was excited for the opportunity to give Emily and Brian the first pictures of their family that were not—as Emily said to me—taken with an iPhone.

The Hashims have a great sense of humor and we were able to capture a variety of loving moments that exhibit the fun and warmth they share with each other.

As much as the posed family portraits are a necessary part of these sessions, my favorites tend to be the candid shots showing a playful side.

One of Ben's many great suggestions—a portrait in his favorite hat.

Ben brought his big smile and creativity to the shoot, including fun with the foliage.

Emily shares a tender moment with her daughter, Sam. These unplanned shots often become the gems of our session, so I am always observing and maintaining a moderate pace which allow interactions like this to happen.

Sam was amazingly calm throughout the entire shoot and quick to crack a smile, especially in Brian's hands.
